Salwan Momika, an Iraqi man, who came to the limelight in 2023 after staging several Quran burnings, was shot dead earlier in the week. He was killed during a shootout in Sodertalje, in Sweden. The incident took place a day before Momika was about to face a verdict in a case related to these Quran burnings.

The Stockholm district court confirmed on Thursday that the verdict has been postponed due to the death of one of the defendants. The police reportedly said that they found a man with gunshot wounds after reaching the apartment building, from where they received an alert on Wednesday night.

Who was Salwan Momika?

The 38-year-old Iraqi Assyrian-Aramean refugee, Salman Momika, gained international limelight in the year 2023 after burning Islamic holy books outside Stockholm Central mosque. These burnings occurred during Eid al-Adha, one of the most important Islamic holiday. This move angered Muslim communities across the world, sparking riots and even unrest in many regions.

He is a Christian Iraqi citizen living in Sweden. An international media organisation reports that according to Salwan, Quran burning was done to raise awareness about the mistreatment of Christian minorities by Islamists in some parts of the Muslim world.
