Leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress party star campaigner Rahul Gandhi launched a White T-shirt Movement on January 19, 2025. According to the official campaign website, ‘a white T-shirt isn’t just a piece of cloth’ but symbolises the campaign’s guiding principles: Compassion, Unity, Nonviolence, Equality, and Progress for All.
Rahul Gandhi attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claiming that the economic inequality in India is rising while the Prime Minister is busy enriching a select few capitalists. Gandhi also accused the government of turning its back on the poor and asked the youth to participate in his White T-shirt Movement.
While every political figure is associated with a particular attire, Rahul Gandhi decided to use the modern-day white T-shirt. Like the Nehru jacket or the Modi Kurta, the White T-shirt has become synonymous with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s political presence. This decision also goes along with his popular image at Bharat Jodo Yatra.
Commenting on his white T-shirt, the 54-year-old ex-Congress chief, in June 2024, said that the white T-shirt symbolises transparency, solidity, and simplicity.
“If you believe in economic justice, oppose rising wealth inequalities, fight for social equality, reject all forms of discrimination and strive for peace and stability in our country, wear your white T-shirt and enjoy the movement,” said Gandhi in a video voice-over posted on his personal social media account on X. The post also had #WhiteT-shirtMovement and said that it aims to reduce inequality for the benefit of workers who are forced to endure various forms of injustice and social atrocities.
“In such a situation, it is the responsibility of all of us to raise our voices strongly to get them justice and rights. With this thought, we are starting the white T-shirt movement,” adds Gandhi on X.
