On January 30, marking Mahatma Gandhi’s death anniversary, the civic bodies of Bengaluru and Hyderabad imposed a ban on animal slaughter and meat sales for a day. The day is also celebrated as Martyr’s Day to honour sacrifices made for the country.
Many leaders paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi and others. Lieutenant Governor, K Kailashnathan, paid homage to the father of the nation by garlanding the statue of Mahatma at Gandhi Thidal.
Communist Party of India (CPI) general secretary, D Raja Garland, garlanded another statue of Mahatma Gandhi near Central Park to pay tribute to him on his death anniversary. However, not all organisations have taken the Martyr’ day in the same manner.
ABHM Honours Godse
The Akhil Bharat Hindu Maha Sabha on Thursday honoured Nathuram Godse, the man who killed Mahatma Gandhi on this day in 1948.
On 29th January, a fanatic in his 30s entered Delhi with a Beretta automatic pistol. The man was called Nathuram Godse and was a member of the Hindu Maha Sabha, a right-wing party. Godse was earlier part of the Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh or the RSS, which is the ideological fountainhead of the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP). The party currently rules India.
Nathuram Godse accused Gandhi of having betrayed Hindus by being too pro-Muslim and having a soft gesture towards Pakistan. A trial court sentenced Nathuram Godse to death after a year and he was executed in November 1949.
