Indian Railways trialled the first Vande Bharat train from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) to Srinagar railway station on Saturday. The train traveled across the highest rail bridge in the world, the Chenab Bridge. For Indian Railways and the entire Jammu and Kashmir area, the bridge’s passage was a momentous occasion.
Vande Bharat train and its features
The Chenab rail bridge is situated in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi District between Bakkal and Kauri. It spans the Chenab River and is 359 meters above the ground. It is both the tallest rail bridge and
the tallest arch bridge in the world. It went into operation in 2022. When the train is operational, it will also cross the first cable-stayed rail bridge in India, the Anji Khad Bridge. The train was specifically built to travel smoothly in the Kashmir Valley’s frigid temperature. The train’s design also considered climate adaptability, considering how comfortable it would be for passengers to ride in the Valley’s frigid climate. Even at temperatures as low as -30 degrees Celsius, the train can function.
On February 15, 2019, the first Vande Bharat Express was flagged off. It traveled the New Delhi Kanpur-Allahabad-Varanasi route at 160 km/h. Four different train types—the Vande Bharat Chair Car, Vande Bharat Sleeper, Namo Bharat Train, and Amrit Bharat Train—are being introduced in India under this heading.
