Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma sentenced to jail for 3 months

Published:

On Thursday, filmmaker and screenwriter Ram Gopal Varma was sentenced to jail for 3 months by a Mumbai court in connection with a cheque bounce case. On Tuesday, the Andheri magistrate court also ordered him to pay the complainant in the case with Rs. 3.72 lakh within three months. The court ruled that Varma would be sentenced to three more months in jail if the fine was not paid. The judge granted Varma a non-bailable warrant because he was not in court on the day of the ruling.

Ram Gopal Varma shared a post regarding the judgment

“With regard to the news about me and Andheri court, I want to clarify that it is to do with a 7-year-old case of Rs 2 lakh 38 thousand amount, relating to an ex-employee. It is not about settling the meagre amount but is about refusing to be exploited in the attempts to fabricate. Anyway, that’s all I can say for now as it’s in court,” the filmmaker said in a post on X

In 2018, a company called Shree, represented by Mahesh Chandra Mishra, filed a lawsuit against Mr. Varma’s company. The filmmaker has been having financial difficulties lately, which were made worse when he had to sell his office during the COVID-19 outbreak.
