BJP Wins Chandigarh Mayor Election, Defeating AAP-Congress

Published:

The Chandigarh mayoral election took place on January 30 between BJP and AAP-Congress alliance. Chandigarh saw Harpreet Kaur Babla of the BJP secure victory alongside 19 votes against AAP’s Prem Lata who managed to secure 17 votes. At Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) hall the voting process was completed after all 36 votes were cast without any discarded ballots. The outcome of the election went to the BJP after three councillors from the opposition alliance provided their support.

BJP wins key defection

Before the election support between AAP-Congress included 19 votes with additional backing from Chandigarh Member of Parliament Manish Tewari. The BJP’s voting strength rose to 16 when Congress councillor Gurbax Rawat decided to support the party. A retired Judge from the Supreme Court Jaishree Thakur executed the supervision role to guarantee electoral transparency.

The BJP celebrated its return to power by winning both the mayoral position and the Chandigarh Lok Sabha seat in 2024. Political power in Chandigarh diminished for the BJP after a problematic mayoral election last year included ballot tampering incidents. Party officials view this electoral victory as rebuilding its damaged reputation toward the upcoming Delhi assembly polls.
