In Maharashtra’s Jalgaon, at least 13 passengers were killed on Wednesday evening, January 22, 2025, when they jumped off a train after hearing rumors of a fire and were hit by another train that was speeding down the nearby track. Fearing a fire, passengers on the 12533 Lucknow-Mumbai Pushpak Express jumped off their coaches and were struck by the Karnataka Express.
The Railway Board has declared that the deceased’s families will receive an ex-gratia of Rs 1.5 lakh each, with Rs 50,000 going to those with severe wounds and Rs 5,000 going to those with minor injuries.
PM Modi and Ajit Pawar express condolence
Speaking to reporters, Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar said, “After the railway incident,
the administration and other forces got active and started the relief and rescue operations. Udhal Kumar and Vijay Kumar from Shravasti were on the train. They were travelling in the general bogie and were sitting on the upper berth. One tea seller from the pantry shouted about a fire in the bogie, both of them heard that and panicked.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the Jalgaon train disaster. “Anguished by the tragic accident on the railway tracks in Jalgaon, Maharashtra. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and pray for the speedy recovery of all the injured. Authorities are providing all possible assistance to those affected,” the Prime Minister’s Office stated in a post on X.
