Twenty two US states have filed lawsuit against President Donald Trump’s stance on birthright citizenship. According to Donald Trump, people whose fathers were not US citizens or whose mothers entered the country illegally will not be automatically granted US citizenship.

What is birthright citizenship?

Birthright citizenship is a legal principle under which citizenship is automatically granted to individuals upon birth in the US. There are two forms of birthright citizenship: ancestry-based citizenship and birthplace-based citizenship.

Trump’s Controversial Position

President Trump argues that children born to undocumented immigrants should not be granted US citizenship, because it will encourage illegal immigration and “birth tourism”.
